Joshua C. Fleetwood was a Democrat and Baptist of Hertford,Perquimans County, N.C. Joshua C. Fleetwood's diary contains entries, 11 September-10 October1850, documenting his journey by horseback from Hertford through Louisburg,Hillsborough, and Pilot Mountain, N.C.; Wytheville and Abington, Va.; andRogersville, Knoxville, Sparta, Nashville, and Columbia, Tenn., to visit his unclein Fayette County, Tenn. These entries describe the route traveled through NorthCarolina, Virginia, and Tennessee, and scenery along the way; the places Fleetwoodstopped overnight and the quality of meals and lodging; the weather; and histraveling companions and other individuals he met, especially women in each stoppingplace. Fleetwood's account of his return trip, 6-25 January 1851, throughWaynesborough, Shelbyville, Kingston, Knoxville, and Jonesborough, Tenn., issimilar, but more vivid and detailed, with occasional mention of political andreligious discussions Fleetwood had with his hosts. Also included are a record ofexpenses for the trip; miscellaneous accounts, 1852-1858, including one in 1858relating to a slave named Peter; and a eulogy for Samuel Pruden, minister of MountCarmel Baptist Church, possibly in Northampton County, N.C., who died 12 February1894.
